Reps. Todd Smola and Jay Barrows endorse Jeff Perry for Congress

SANDWICH - Today, state representative and candidate for Congress Jeff Perry (10th Massachusetts) added to his growing list of endorsements by announcing the support of Representatives Todd Smola (R-Three Rivers) and Jay Barrows (R-Mansfield).

With his endorsement today, Representative Todd Smola stated, "Jeff Perry does his homework and he knows the issues that are important to the people he represents. Jeff has never been afraid to stand up to the status quo and he is always prepared to take on the majority when they are leading us down the wrong path. Working with Jeff in the state legislature has been a fantastic experience. He never wasted a minute during his years of service. Jeff took on the majority, often leading the charge, to fight against higher taxes, bigger government and illegal immigration. He always stands firm and never backs down on the things he believes to be right for the people. He is a person of great character and integrity who will work tirelessly to bring positive change to Washington. It is an honor for me to give my wholehearted endorsement to Jeff Perry for Congress. He will not let us down."

Representative Jay Barrows also endorsed Jeff Perry today and stated, "Today, I join the many others who support Jeff Perry for Congress. Working alongside Jeff in the State House, I believe he is ready to hit the ground on day one on Capitol Hill. Jeff Perry will be a great defender of the Constitution and an effective representative for the people of the 10th Massachusetts."

Upon receiving these additional endorsements, Jeff Perry said, "One of the things I will miss most about leaving the Legislature and hopefully going to Congress is working together with many outstanding public servants, such as Todd and Jay. Their districts are well served by these gentlemen and I am honored to have their support in my bid for Congress."

Letter: Perry's fiscal conservatism will serve all of U.S. well

Perry's fiscal conservatism will serve all of U.S. well

With the Sept. 14 primary election rapidly approaching, we urge people living in the 10th Congressional District to give serious thought as to whom they believe will best represent them in Congress.

Having had the privilege of knowing our state representative, Jeffrey Davis Perry, for the past eight years, we can assure you that he is a man of great principles who will work tirelessly for his constituents. His concerns for law-and-order issues are well-documented by his legislative history. A strong fiscal conservative, Jeff realized that the Massachusetts health plan would never be cost-effective and was one of just two legislators who voted against it. As has been proved in the five years since it was passed, with several federal bailouts required to cover cost overruns, he was right on target with his vote.

Jeff's sponsorship of the illegal immigration amendment that would have required proof of citizenship before receiving benefits was strongly supported by both parties in the Statehouse.

A man dedicated to the principles of our Constitution, Jeff Perry will bring his small-government values with him to Washington, and both the 10th District and America will be the better for it!

Michael C. Bailey: Congress - Jeffrey D. Perry (R)

State Representative Jeffrey D. Perry (R – Sandwich) already knows what his first vote will be should he prove successful in his bid for US Representative of the 10th Congressional District.

“The future direction of Congress and the future direction of the country is going to be dictated by who’s in charge,” he said, “and I believe we’re going to have a Republican wave that’s going to take back the House, so the first vote I get to take is to remove (Democratic California Congressman) Nancy Pelosi as Speaker.”

Rep. Perry, a four-term member of the Massachusetts House, said he hopes to be part of that Republican wave, which he said would bring balance to Congress and help put the breaks on the Obama Administration’s agenda, “which I believe is dangerous for the country.”

The lawyer, former Wareham police sergeant, and former Sandwich convenience store owner had been contemplating the next step in his career since last fall, but said transitioning from state to federal government was not necessarily his first choice.

“I said I wouldn’t serve more than 10 years in the state Legislature, and so I was thinking, should I run for one more term — which would have been my fifth — should I go back to the private sector, or should I seek something else?” he said during an interview at his Sandwich campaign office. “I really reflected on what motivates me to run at all, what are the issues that I care most about, and what are the issues I’ve been working on, and they turned out to be federal issues.”

He found further motivation for his decision in “an energy that was building” within the GOP nationally, “and I came to the conclusion the people of the 10th district deserved a conservative choice on the ballot.”

Rep. Perry said he was braced for the possibility of running against Congressman William D. Delahunt, but did not plan his campaign around Rep. Delahunt, who decided this past spring to retire.

“It’s irrelevant to me who’s running on the other side. The way that I try to run the campaigns are about my record, my vision, my plan for the future, what I would do if I had the pleasure of serving as the next Congressman,” he said.

“But let me be clear: I’m glad that he’s not running. It makes the seat in the eyes of, maybe, the national folks or the local folks a more winnable seat when it’s an open seat,” he added. “It gives an opportunity for people who may just default to the incumbent to look and say, ‘Oh there is no incumbent, who should I support?’ So it does create opportunities that wouldn’t be there if Mr. Delahunt was there.”

Rep. Delahunt’s departure drew the attention of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which has deemed the 10th district one of three Massachusetts districts most vulnerable to a GOP win — a possibility reflected by the fact Rep. Perry is one of four Republicans vying for the seat in the September primary.
